Homerton station was originally opened by the North London Railway as part of their line to Poplar on 1 October 1868. Following enemy action during the Second World War, the lines through the station were closed and services ceased on 15 May 1944 with a replacement bus service being provided until the station was officially closed on 23 April 1945.

The original station building fell into disrepair and, in the mid 1950s became structurally unsound and was demolished.

In the early 1980s, the original NLR route to Poplar was closed and the tracks rerouted to Stratford. Alongside this reopening, Homerton Station was rebuilt and reopened to serve the line on 13 May 1985.

Management of Homerton Station passed from Silverlink to London Overground in 2007.
