Hackney Wick station was opened by British Rail (Eastern Region) in 1980 following the realignment of the lines in the local area.  The railway originally served nearby Victoria Park station before terminating at Stratford, but this link, along with Victoria Park, was closed and the track was diverted to allow services to serve North Woolwich as part of the Crosslink scheme and thus, Hackney Wick station was opened to provide access to the railway.

Management of the station passed from Silverlink to London Overground on 11 November 2007.  Since the takeover, Hackney Wick has seen several improvements made to the station and it is currently in the process of being rebuilt as part of a wider regeneration of the area, with work due to be completed by the middle of 2018.
