History

Hampstead Station, designed by renowned architect Leslie Green in his typical oxblood tiling scheme, was opened by the Charing Cross, Euston & Hampstead Railway on 22 June 1907. The station was originally planned to be called Heath Street, and this is shown in the tiling on the walls at platform level.

Hampstead station sits on a very steep hill at the junction of Heath Street & Hampstead High Street and due to this, the station’s platforms are the deepest on the London Underground, sitting 192 feet (58.5 metres) below street level, along with the deepest lift shaft on the network at 180 feet (55 metres).
