Romford Station opened as the temporary eastern terminus of the Eastern Counties Railway in June 1839 before becoming a through station when the line was extended to Brentwood in 1840.

In June 1893, the London, Tilbury & Southend Railway opened their branch line from Upminster, which terminated at a separately built station on the opposite side of South Street. The two stations were connected by a footbridge over the road that was only opened when an LT&SR train was due into the platform, this arrangement ceased in April 1934 when the LT&SR sold their station building and the two stations were combined under the management of the London & North Eastern Railway.

Several attempts were made during the 1960s to close the line to Upminster but these failed, with the line being electrified in 1986.

Management of the station passed from Abellio Greater Anglia to TfL Rail in May 2015.
