London Fields station was opened on 27 May 1872 by the Great Eastern Railway on their new, shorter route from Bishopsgate to Edmonton.

During World War 1, the station was closed from May 1916 to July 1919 as an economy measure.

In 1980, services through London Fields were stripped back to peak hours only due to lack of demand, but this service ceased altogether in 1981 when a fire ripped through the station buildings.  London Fields remained closed until 1986, when the decision was taken to repair and reopen the station, albeit still only during peak hours. Regular daytime services were introduced in 1998 with evening and Saturday services added in 2001, the current service (including Sunday services) was introduced in 2005.

Management of the station, and the services calling here was transferred from Abellio Greater Anglia to London Overground in May 2015.
