History

Bethnal Green Junction Station was opened in 1872 by the Great Eastern Railway on their new line from Bishopsgate to Hackney Downs. The new line diverged from the existing GER lines at a point just to the west of Cambridge Heath Road and Bethnal Green Station was constructed almost immediately to the west of this junction.

Upon opening, the station had 4 platforms that served both of the GER routes passing through. This lasted until 1946, when the services between Liverpool Street (now the main terminus) and Stratford ceased calling at Bethnal Green and the two platforms on that line were closed, also resulting in the renaming of the station to Bethnal Green. The London-bound platform on this line was demolished and the tracks altered to allow services to pass from the former fast lines onto the slow lines, an arrangement still in use today.

Management of Bethnal Green and the services calling there passed from Abellio Greater Anglia to London Overground in May 2015.
