The ALX400 was released to replace the Alexander R-series of vehicles and proved to be a massive success with a number of national operators. The ALX400 proved to be the favoured double decker for many London operators with Arriva London, First London, Go Ahead, Metroline & Stagecoach buying large fleets. Transport for London (TfL) specification models were fitted with a central exit door and typically had 45 seats on the upper deck, and between 17 and 22 seats on the lower deck depending on the chassis specified.
In late 2005 Alexander Dennis launched the Enviro400, which was intended as the replacement for the ALX400. However, both Arriva London & Stagecoach London purchased further examples of the ALX400 up until the end of 2006. The pioneer ALX400, which was delivered to Arriva London in 1997 has been donated to the London Transport Museum at Acton for display purposes.
