History

Leytonstone High Road Station was opened simply as Leytonstone by the Tottenham & Forest Gate Railway on 9 July 1894. The station gained it’s current name on 1 May 1949

Leytonstone High Road was built with a rather unusual feature. The station goods yard was built at ground level below the eastbound platform and, due to the railway line being on a viaduct, the wagons of goods trains had to be lowered to ground level by means of a hydraulic hoist.

The original platform buildings were destroyed in a fire during the 1950s and these buildings were replaced by modern , flat canopies that themselves fell victim to fire in the 1980s.
