Highams Park station was opened in 1873, originally named Hale End. The station name was subsequently changed in 1894 to Highams Park and Hale End. The present Neville Ashbee designed station building was opened in 1903 and the Hale End part of the name was dropped.

Highams Park has a level crossing at the south end of the station which is also home to a period LNER signalbox that was saved from demolition in 2012 by local residents and has been converted into a creperie.  For more information on the history of the signalbox, click on the image below.
