History

The station was opened as Hoe Street by the Great Eastern Railway in 1870 to serve their line from Lea Bridge to the temporary terminus at Shern Hall Street, with the extension to Chingford opening in 1873.

In 1948, the nationalisation of the railways led to ownership passing to British Railways Eastern Region who electrified the line in the late 1950s.  On 1 September 1968, the station became an interchange as it became the Eastern terminus of the new London Underground Victoria Line.  The station name was also changed from Hoe Street to Walthamstow Central at this time.

In 2015, Chingford to Liverpool Street services run by Abellio Greater Anglia passed ownership to London Overground.
