The Class 172 Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU) is built by Derby based Bombardier Transportation and is a member of the ‘Turbostar’ family of multiple units. The units in use on London Overground are leased from Angel Trains.
Introduced in July 2010, the Class 172 units allowed the removal of older Class 150 diesel multiple units from service on the Gospel Oak – Barking line and although they have a lower seating capacity of 120 seats, the standing capacity is a vast improvement over the older units making them ideal for shorter commuter journeys.
The success of London Overground’s operation of the Gospel Oak to Barking Line has meant that the 2-car Class 172s have proved insufficient in terms of capacity. Initially, plans were made to replace them with new, larger capacity diesel units.
However, subsequent to this proposal, the government announced plans to electrify the GOBLIN, with the intention that Transport for London will lease a fleet of newly built 4-car Class 710 Electric Multiple Units for use on the route.
The electrification was due for completion in July 2017 but this has slipped back due to delays with the project.
